#SafeAndFreeDC Safety Summit and Community Safety Fair

Safety Summit:

During this impactful event, we will have the opportunity to hear from local advocates who will shed light on the prospect of co-creating a #SafeAndFreeDC. Our focus will be to decrease harm overall by focusing on prevention rather than punishment, especially considering the disproportionate impact on the Black community. As the District faces the challenge of a carceral system where over 90% of those affected are Black, our goal is to engage in a constructive conversation about the role of legislation in exacerbating crime and how pro-Black legislation can significantly enhance the safety of all residents.

Community Safety Fair:

The Safety Summit will be followed by a Community Safety Fair, to provide the community with an opportunity for continued engagement and networking. Specifically, the Community Safety Fair is an opportunity for residents of the District to come together and learn from community leaders who rarely get a platform about how to co-create a sustainably #SafeAndFreeDC. There will be no formal programming during this event; instead, participants from DC Justice Lab’s Policy Training Academy will present their ideas in a “science fair” format as guests walk around the event space. The Fair is both an opportunity to celebrate the participants’ hard work and dedication to the community and an invitation to dream and build together. For three hours, anyone who attends can speak directly with residents who are already fighting to improve public safety in the District and join the effort to ensure the District’s policies reflect the will of the people.
