Freedom Teaching: Douglass Center Summer Institute

The Frederick Douglass Center for Leadership Through the Humanities presents

Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm – Breakfast and lunch will be provided
Location: Tawes Hall
University of Maryland, College Park (Greenline train to College Park Metro and FREE UMD shuttle to campus and on-campus parking available)

Inspired by the 60th anniversary, legacy, and ongoing significance of Freedom Summer and Freedom Schools, the theme for this year’s Summer Institute will be Freedom Teaching. Through a series of workshops led by UMD faculty and local area teachers, we will explore topics including


  • Rosa Parks and Black Power
  • Performing the Black Freedom Struggle
  • Teaching Palestine-Israel
  • AI & the Classroom
  • Pedagogy and Hip Hop



Maryland, DC, and Virginia secondary school and community-based educators are encouraged to attend!


  • Maryland school-based educators who attend will be eligible to receive 8 Professional Development Points (PDPs)! More information here.
  • DC School based educators who attend will receive a certificate of attendance for PLUs to submit for their renewal teacher credentials.
